The Ultimate Guide to Dubai: 20 Things To Do

I’ve come to realise… people either love or dislike Dubai. After my latest YouTube episode, I got a range of comments that perfectly capture these mixed feelings. Some of you absolutely loved Dubai’s larger-than-life energy, while others found it a bit too much. It’s interesting, because Dubai really does provoke strong opinions. Whether it’s the world-class shopping, the futuristic skyscrapers, or the adventure of the desert dunes—this city either pulls you in or leaves you feeling a little overwhelmed. (If you haven’t seen the episode yet, check it out here for a deeper dive into my experience.)

So, where do you stand? If you’re someone who’d choose Las Vegas over a quiet mountain retreat, you’ll probably vibe with this city.

If you’re still reading, I think we both know your answer... Let’s dive into the basics, and then I’ll share some tips, things you need to know before visiting, and the must-see spots to check out while you're here.

When to Visit Dubai

Dubai is one of those places where the weather is a huge factor in planning your trip. The best time to visit is between November and April when the weather is warm but not unbearable. Temperatures during this period hover around 25-30°C or 77-86°F, making it perfect for everything from desert safaris to beach days. If you're visiting in summer, be prepared for heatwaves—temperatures can soar past 40°C or 104°F. That said, the cooler months are when Dubai really comes alive, with outdoor festivals, events, and an overall more pleasant atmosphere.

Things You Must Know

  1. Dress Code: Dubai is an ultra-modern city, but it’s still rooted in its Islamic culture. When you’re out and about, especially in public spaces, it’s a good idea to dress modestly. That means covering shoulders and knees. Swimwear is fine at the beach or hotel pools, but keep it covered when walking around the city during the day especially.

  2. Alcohol: You won’t find public drinking like in many Western cities. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels, bars, and clubs, but it’s illegal to drink in public places. Drinking and driving is also strictly prohibited, with hefty fines or even jail time.

  3. Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A standard tip for restaurant service is about 10-15%, but you don’t have to tip everywhere. Some places will include a service charge in the bill, so always check before adding more.

  4. Respecting the Culture: The UAE is a melting pot, but it’s still conservative in many ways. Be mindful of local customs, especially during Ramadan, when eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is prohibited (it’s a great opportunity to experience the local culture).
